Beginner guide: your first 10 minutes in Warhosts

A step-by-step plan for the first battle: from choosing a faction to beating the bot on easy.

Pick the Kingdom and the Easy difficulty. Spend the starting 200 gold on 4 militia and 2 archers, then every 30 seconds repeat the wave with the Repeat button. Build the first workshop in the first minutes, upgrade the castle as soon as you have 250 gold (not before 1:15) and cast the spell on groups of enemies.

Step 1. Faction and difficulty

In the menu press Play, choose the Kingdom (armor and Formation protect the army), a Random opponent and the Easy difficulty. Normal suits you once you win on Easy reliably; Hard is for those who know the economy and counters.

Step 2. The first 200 gold

You have 200 gold and 30 seconds before the first wave. Tap the Militia card four times and the Archer card twice: that is exactly 200 gold. The game places the units itself: shield-bearers in front, archers behind.

Step 3. Every 30 seconds: repeat

A wave leaves for the field every 30 seconds. Press Repeat to place the same wave as last time. If you do not have enough gold for the whole wave, whatever you can afford is repeated. This way you spend seconds on decisions, not on taps.

Step 4. Workshop and mine

The first workshop costs 200 gold and gives +3 gold per second: it pays back in about 67 seconds. Build it in the first two minutes while the fight does not need all your gold. The mine in the center gives another +4 per second to whoever holds it with an army: try to get your units to the center before the enemy. Economy details: gold, workshops and the mine.

Step 5. The castle

Open the Castle window. The upgrade to level 2 costs 250 gold and is available not before 1:15 of the match. It unlocks spearmen and the standard-bearer and enlarges the placement field. Levels 3–5 cost 550, 1000, 1600 gold. Do not delay the castle for long: higher-tier units are much stronger than cheap ones. Details: the castle and its levels.

Step 6. The spell

Press the spell button, then a point on the field. It works best when enemies are bunched up: at a line, at the mine or in a narrow spot. The cooldown is 45–50 seconds, so do not hold the spell “for later”. Details: hero spells.

Step 7. Pick units against the enemy

If the enemy comes with riders (knights, wolves), take spearmen. If he has many archers, you need fast units to reach them. Against many cheap units a mage with area damage helps. The table: counters.

Five beginner mistakes

  1. All gold into tier 1. A unit's price grows 25% for every castle level above its tier: a militia costs 30 at level 1 and 60 at level 5.
  2. A forgotten castle. Without upgrades you hit a ceiling: at level 1 a wave holds no more than 18 units.
  3. Ranged units in the front line. Archers and mages are fragile: place them behind.
  4. An unused spell. It is free and returns every 45–50 seconds.
  5. No workshops. Four workshops give +12 gold per second: more than half of the base income (19).

What next

When you win on Easy reliably, move to Normal and study the unit reference. Then try online battles and the ranking.

FAQ

Which faction should a beginner pick?

The Kingdom: armor and Formation forgive mistakes and its units work in an obvious way. When you are comfortable, try the Wilds (aggression) and the Pale Court (attrition).

Can I play without registering?
